Beachy Input

I’ve never had a real vacation with the family, but we’re going on one soon. The beach.
I’m not sure what to do (other than make amazing sandcastles with the kids –Gina’s been promoting me as an expert to the kids, so a lot of expectation there— and generally do fun family things).
Any suggestions?
Trying to decide if I should bring writing work, or just relax and forget about it for a week (leaning that way).
Any suggestions?
Committed to trying to bring a really good book I’ve never read before.
Any suggestions?
Should I take suggestions about this stuff, or not?
Any suggestions?

Do things you normally don’t do. Don’t do things you normally do. It’s a vacation, and it’s not just location that makes it so.
Enjoy.

Have you read Mahaney’s article on doing family vacations?

I would suggest that you don’t take any suggestions. Oh, and also take the kiddos digging in the surf for the little sand clams. SUPER fun…

Don’t take work with you. Make the week all about your wife, children, and God’s creation.
That’s my suggestion, which you should take, but the jury’s out on others’ suggestions.

Bring sunscreen. Reapply it zealously. Seriously, as a Floridian, you wouldn’t believe how many miserable, lobster-red tourists I see. Nothing spoils a vacation faster than a really bad sunburn.
