Photographs are Time-Machines
» S.D. Smith

This photo is from the blog The Big Picture, featuring amazing photographs. The series from which this picture is taken is called “Soccer in South Africa.”

This scene feels like it is taken directly from my memory, as I have seen this scene (or ones very much like it) countless times in Madadeni township (and elsewhere). Makes me miss Madadeni, Newcastle, Kwa-Zulu Natal, and South Africa.

Makes me remember a time when your Dad used to drive thru Madadeni with a bunch of soccer balls and when he saw kids playing football with various objects…fruit, foam wig stand heads, and many other objects…potatoes, plastic cups, etc. Anyway he would trade with them. Very fun. What are these kids playing with?

Change those children to Latinos and those photos could have been taken in Mexico.
